With its abundance of vibrant cultures, Asia offers a bounty of inspiration to decorate your bedroom. Japanese block prints shine in the serene ambiance of Zen style, while a beautifully painted Chinese vase sets the stage for opulence. The intricate designs and glowing colors of Indian saris inspire a vivid Asian Fusion theme. If you don't want to redo your entire bedroom, introduce just a few Asian decorative accents to add color and personality to modern decor. Asian design also blends with eclectic styles such as Retro or Boho.

Feng Shui Considerations

Feng shui, the Chinese art of creating a harmonious living environment, is a natural companion to Asian decor. In a bedroom, the cardinal feng shui principle is to remove any item that interferes with the room's main purposes: enjoyment, rest and rejuvenation. To apply the principle, keep your bedroom decor focused and clutter-free. Electronic devices are big offenders, so keep your television, computer, cellphone, game console and similar distractions in other parts of the house. Avoid using the area beneath the bed for storage. If your bedroom has an attached bath, use a curtain or screen to separate the bathroom from the bed.

Japanese Simplicity

For a serene bedroom, choose a Japanese decor that embodies the essence of Zen. Base your color scheme on dark to light shades of soft neutrals. Flooring is ideally a dark hardwood with traditional tatami mats placed on it. A seagrass or coir area rug also provides the desired look. A Western interpretation of the traditional futon bed is a futon or single mattress on a low wooden platform. Keep other pieces simply styled. Accent plain walls with Japanese prints within a theme, such as all landscapes, animals or scenes of daily life. For your accent colors, take inspiration from the deeper tones in the prints, and repeat the colors in bed dressings, lamp bases and display objects, such as a beautiful tea service.

Chinese Opulence

The bed takes center stage in a Chinese-themed bedroom. Standing atop an Oriental rug and constructed of dark, ornately carved wood, the bed is typically dressed with richly patterned brocades and pillows in the traditional color scheme of red, black and gold. A four-poster canopy crowns the bed for maximum opulence. Coordinate chests, benches and other furniture pieces with the bed frame. China's rich art history offers an array of choices for accent pieces. On a table or dresser top, create a tableau with clay figurines, incense holders, teapots or vases. Use Chinese prints, masks, decorative fans or screens for wall art. In feng shui, jade plants attract prosperity, so install a large specimen plant in your master bedroom to bring prosperity to the household.

Asian Fusion

Fusion styles let you mix and match with abandon, so combine all the cultures of Asian with your favorite eras. Unify the look by choosing furniture pieces in dark wood with a rustic style. Paint the walls a soft neutral or off-white. Spread a dhurrie rug on the floor and use a similar fabric as a bed cover. Pile on throw pillows covered in sari silks or Japanese shibori fabrics. Dress the windows with Chinese brocades or Japanese-style wooden shutters. Display treasured ornaments -- Mongolian camel bells, Chinese dragon scrolls or Thai elephant figurines -- around the room. Add a contemporary touch with travel or movie posters from Asian countries. Use your imagination to create the multicultural sanctuary of your dreams.
